The Burke A. O'Brien Fund

Burke O'Brien was a longtime staff member and dedicated wilderness educator at Northwaters and Langskib Wilderness Programs. Burke taught a generation of young people to understand the meaning of courage, to find joy in the everyday, to embrace their challenges, to push their limits and to listen to their hearts. His life tragically ended January 12, 2003 when he was shot and killed in New York City.

Burke was one of the visionaries whose ideas helped to create the Deepwater Experiential Education Project (DEEP). Through a program jointly offered by DEEP and Northwaters and Langskib, his work continues. The program incorporates the elements of a Northwaters and Langskib canoe trip - wilderness, connection to the land, leadership, personal growth, rites of passage and community building -- adapted to work specifically with the group of young people who participate. For more details about this program please contact Northwaters and Langskib Wilderness Programs (www.northwaters.com).
